M. Gottesman & Company, specializing in the sale of raw materials for papermaking, is founded in New York City.
D. S. Gottesman (1885-1956), brought to America from Hungary as a child, enters the family business as a young man. Gottesman eventually becomes a successful investment banker, real estate investor, an organizer of the Central National Bank of the City of New York, and a notable philanthropist.
Central National-Gottesman begins to establish a global network of sales offices throughout Europe and South America.
Lindenmeyr Paper Corporation, one of the leading independent fine paper merchants in the United States, is acquired by Central National-Gottesman (1984). Lindenmeyr's own illustrious beginnings as a New York City-based company founded by European immigrants date back to 1859. Seldom have two entities come together whose activities are so different, yet complementary, and who share in common a similar philosophy of business and a long history of dedication to the same industry.
Subsequently, the acquisition of D.F. Munroe Company, a paper merchant in the New England area, is completed (1988).
Central National-Gottesman acquires Communication Paper Corporation, which specializes in the sale of communication and printing papers (1991), and the Perkins & Squier Company, a seller of book publishing papers (1998). The combination of these businesses with Lindenmeyr Paper and D.F. Munroe under the firm's
Lindenmeyr Division creates one of the largest independent fine paper merchants in the U.S.
The international operations of our Central National-Gottesman Division also expand through the opening of offices in important emerging markets – particularly in Eastern Europe and Asia.
The Richmond, Virginia operations of a competing paper merchant are acquired under the
Lindenmeyr Division (2001), which also expands into a major new market by opening a warehouse/sales office in Itasca, Illinois, near Chicago, the largest print market in the U.S. (2002).
Central National-Gottesman Inc., now the world's preeminent privately owned marketer of pulp and paper, continues to strengthen distribution capabilities and global reach to meet customer needs with offices in 26 U.S. cities, 17 countries and representatives in 40 international locations.
